Case hero

How
A back link, an eyebrow, the page’s only h1, one lede paragraph, an optional figure, then the credits as a description list. A disclosure note can follow the credits.
When
Once at the top of every case study and the design systems page. Never twice on a page, because it carries the h1.
Where
The first thing inside <Site>, before any band. Nothing sits above it.

src/components/ui/CaseHero.astro.

---
import CaseHero from '../../components/ui/CaseHero.astro';
import CaseFigure from '../../components/ui/CaseFigure.astro';
---
<CaseHero
eyebrow="Case study"
heading="Project Blackbird"
lede="An oral history of the Chicago restaurant that changed the city's dining."
meta={[
{ term: 'Role', value: 'Creative Director / Design Lead' },
{ term: 'Org', value: 'MTG Media Group' },
]}
>
<CaseFigure slot="figure" src="/images/hero.jpg" light="/images/hero-light.png" alt="..." />
</CaseHero>
Prop Type Default What it does
sdc-eyebrow string required The label above the title.
heading string required Becomes the h1.
lede string required The one paragraph that says what the work was. Inline HTML is allowed.
meta array required { term, value } pairs, passed through to the meta row.
note string none A disclosure under the credits.
backHref string '/#work' Where the way back points.
backLabel string '← Case studies' What the way back says.

Hero art goes in the figure slot rather than a prop, so the hero does not have to know anything about image shapes.

It is a real link at the top of the page, not a reliance on the browser back button. Someone arriving from a search result has no history to go back to, and that is the most common way these pages get opened.

One paragraph, and it says what the work was rather than selling it. It is the first thing a hiring manager reads, and it is often the only thing they read.

Do

  • Use it once per page.
  • Say what the work was in the lede.
  • Put a disclosure in note when the work is proprietary.

Don’t

  • Write a second h1 anywhere on the page.
  • Pass four or more meta pairs.
  • Hide an unresolved fact instead of noting it.
  1. There is exactly one h1 on the page, and it is the hero title.
  2. The back link works from a cold page load with no history.
  3. At 390px wide the credits stack and nothing is cut off.
  4. Proprietary work carries a note saying what is not being shown.
