Texture

A one pixel dot on a twenty pixel grid, drawn as a single background image on the body. Not an overlay element, not an image file, no extra request. Turn it up or down with one token.

It comes from an open-source component that was a black dot grid at 35 percent opacity. At that strength on a warm ground it read as polka dots and fought the cards, so the geometry was kept and the colour moved onto the site’s own ink at 10 percent.

The page ground has it. Cards do not: a card is a surface sitting on the page, and the flat fill is what makes it read as lifted.

The case study dialog does not have it either, which is one of the three reasons the same case study looks slightly different opened in place versus visited directly.

The generated card artwork carries its own paper texture at a slightly different off-white. That is deliberate, not a mismatch: the images are opaque panels, not a continuation of the page.

Text sitting over the grid is technically sitting over two colours. The dot is about 4.4 to 1 against the old hard-coded body grey, which is one of the reasons that grey was replaced with the muted token.

If you darken the dot, re-check body copy contrast against the dot, not just against the ground.

  1. Cards still read as lifted, with no grid inside them.
  2. Body copy over the grid still clears 4.5 to 1 against the dot.
