Quote

Quoting someone takes two different forms on this site and they are documented together because the rules on the words are identical. They are not the same markup.

  1. The recommendation card, a figure.sdc-quote with a decorative quote mark, a blockquote and a figcaption holding the speaker’s title. Fixed size, so a row of them can be fanned. It is page-level markup in src/pages/index.astro and there is no component for it.
  2. The case study pull quote, a bare blockquote.sdc-cs-quote set larger than the prose around it. This one is the Quote component, and it carries no caption.

Everything below about the words applies to both. Everything about captions and fixed height applies to the card only.

How
See the two forms above.
When
To let someone else make a claim that would sound like boasting in the first person. Only for words actually written by that person, quoted exactly.
Where
The card is the recommendations fan on the home page. The pull quote sits inside a case study body.

src/components/ui/Quote.astro is the case study pull quote, not the fan card. The words go in the slot.

---
import Quote from '../../components/ui/Quote.astro';
---
<Quote>
Naming is the part that decides whether anybody else can use it.
</Quote>

No props. It carries no attribution line, which is why the caption rules below do not apply to it: only use it where the prose around it has already said who is speaking.

Verbatim or not at all. One sentence, copied exactly from the source. Trimming for length is allowed; rewording is not, including fixing grammar.

Titles, never names. On the fan card, the caption is the person’s role and company, such as “Product Designer, PayPal Merchant Enablement”. Naming people turns a portfolio into a reference list they did not agree to. The pull quote has no caption, so the attribution goes in the prose above it, under the same rule.

Nothing the rest of the site cannot back up. A quote is not a loophole for a claim that is otherwise barred. If a recommender praised a number the site does not publish, that sentence is not usable.

No em dashes. A quoted sentence containing one is re-punctuated or another sentence is chosen.

The decorative quote glyph is aria-hidden. An automated scan flags it as visible content hidden from screen readers; that flag is wrong for this case and should not be “fixed”. The mark carries no information the blockquote does not.

The fan card is a fixed height. A sentence beyond roughly 180 characters will not fit at the fan’s size. Choose a shorter sentence rather than shrinking the type. The pull quote is not height constrained, but a pull quote running past two lines has stopped being a pull quote.

Do

  • Quote one sentence exactly as written.
  • Caption the fan card with a title and company.
  • Pick the sentence that carries evidence, not praise.

Don’t

  • Use a person’s name.
  • Stitch two sentences together with an ellipsis.
  • Quote a claim the site cannot otherwise support.
  1. The sentence matches the source word for word.
  2. No personal name appears, in the card’s caption or in a pull quote’s lead-in.
  3. A fan card’s text fits at 1440 and at 390 wide without clipping.
